Fall Color Tours
Here are two wonderful color tours that start and end in Elk Rapids.
1. South Loop (below) 2. North Loop
South Loop (map)
- From the traffic light in Elk Rapids, go east on Ames Street. It becomes Cairn Highway.
The north end of Elk Lake is on your right.
- In the village of Kewadin, where Cairn Highway goes left, continue straight on to Cherry Avenue.
You are going through farm country between Elk Lake and Torch Lake.
- In the village of Torch River, cross over the Torch River Bridge and continue on.
At the bridge, Torch River is to the right; Torch Lake to the left.
- Turn right on Aarwood Road (597).
You cross the Rapid River and continue to the village of Rapid City.
- Turn right on Rapid City Road (597).
- Turn right on Hill Road.
- Turn right on M-72.
On your right is Lake Skegemog.
- Turn right on Old M-72. Stay on it as it angles a bit to the left. Continue to the hamlet of Williamsburg.
- Turn right on Elk Lake Road.
On your right is Elk Lake.
- Turn right on U.S. 31 and return to downtown Elk Rapids.
North Loop (map)
- From the traffic light in Elk Rapids, go east on Ames Street. It becomes Cairn Highway.
On your right is the north end of Elk Lake.
- In the village of Kewadin, where Cairn Highway goes left, continue straight on to Cherry Avenue.
You are driving through farm country between Elk Lake and Torch Lake.
- In the village of Torch River, cross over the Torch River Bridge and continue on.
At the bridge, Torch River is to the right; Torch Lake to the left.
- Stay on Crystal Beach Road (593) (Do not take Aarwood.)
Torch Lake is on your left.
- Turn left on Torch Lake Drive (593). Continue to the village of Alden.
- In Alden, follow the main road as it turns a sharp right, then a sharp left.
- Stay on the Torch Lake Drive (593) when it turns left again. (Do not take Alden Hwy.)
As you pass through the village of Clam River, you cross the Clam River.
- Stay left on Torch Lake Drive. (Do not take Bellaire Hwy.)
- Turn left on M-88 and continue through the village of Easport.
On your left is the north end of Torch Lake.
- Turn right on U.S. 31 and return to Elk Rapids.
For an interesting side trip, turn right on Williams Road, then left on
North Bayshore Drive and return to Elk Rapids.
On your right is Grand Traverse Bay.
