From the Township Hall, go east on River Street towards downtown. On your left is Veterans Memorial Park. You will walk through it later on this tour.

The old house [2] at 301 River Street is the oldest surviving house in Elk Rapids, built c. 1859. The Elk Rapids Progress [3] newspaper was established in 1872 by Elvin L.Sprague and was located at on River Street across from the Township Hall from 1872 to 1931. The Cinema [4] was built in 1940 and is an historic Art Deco single-screen movie house with plenty of legroom. On the ceiling was once the largest blacklight mural in the USA, which is now restored. There were three gas stations at the intersection of Cedar and River in the 1940’s and 50’s. Public restrooms are located down Cedar Street to your left.
